This can quickly take a turn for the worst, however, when your child experiences a dental emergency. The first thing to do is remain calm. If you have the right dental team on your side, everything will be all right. Dr. Tom Youngblood, your children’s dentist in Center, discusses how to handle vacation emergencies.
Stay Calm and Contact Your Dental Team
It’s very stressful when your child is in pain, and besides helping them, the first thing you may want to do is panic. Your child looks to you for guidance, and if you’re upset during a dental emergency, they will be too.

Common Dental Emergencies
When you understand what to do during a dental emergency, it’s easier to remain calm. So here are some tips for handling common dental emergencies:
- Soft tissue injuries: These tend to have a lot of blood, so start by containing the bleeding with a cold compress and light pressure. Contact us for further instruction once the bleeding has stopped.
- A chipped or broken tooth: Gather the pieces of the tooth and bring them to our office as soon as possible. Dr. Youngblood will determine the best treatment for your child’s tooth. Small chips will need to be smoothed because they can cause injury or irritation to your soft tissue.
- Dental pain or toothache: Sensitivity in your child’s tooth, or a painful toothache are often indicators of a dental infection. This may require root canal therapy to preserve their tooth, and it’s important to act quickly so the infection doesn’t spread.
- A knocked out tooth: If your child’s tooth is knocked out, time is of the essence – please call us immediately. Transport the tooth to our office carefully, either by replacing it into its socket or in a cup or baggie of milk to keep the cells alive.
